What's on in the Hokitika area?

The West Coast

The South Island's West Coast of New Zealand is a narrow coastal strip which runs parallel to the majestic Southern Alps. The Coast's history is carved out of greenstone (jade), gold, coal and timber. This was pioneer country 130 years ago, and Hokitika is where the Man-Booker prize winner’s book, ‘The Luminaries’ by Eleanor Catton is set.

Nowadays, the attention is on the wonderful scenic wonderland the West Coast provides, with the latest ‘Tourism’ attractions being the Cycle trail & ‘Tree-tops Walkway’ …both close to Hokitika and easily accessible.

A wide range of sightseeing, cycling, hiking, sporting and adventure activities are on offer from our town, or within 2 hours drive. These can include: helicopter tours; jet-boating; visiting Kiwi; exploring the beaches, forests and lakes…or just enjoying a relaxed day in and around our very friendly and attractive town, checking out the different galleries and artistic purchases you might want to take home.

Take in a movie at the beautifully refurbished ‘Art-Deco’ Hokitika Theatre that has been restored, or visit the local museum where helpful staff will answer your questions or provide you with interesting facts and anecdotes of a bygone age.

You could sample at ‘Monteith’s Brewery’ in Greymouth, or visit ‘Shantytown’ to capture more of our history.

The Wild Foods Festival has over the past 25+ years put Hokitika ‘on the map’ in March (second Saturday), and is well worth a visit if here that weekend…check out the Hokitika i-site website for details or © www.westcoast.org.nz
